FRS SCE Senior Capstone Experience 2 Credits
Majors must successfully complete the SeniorCapstone Experience, which may consist of anoriginal research project (open to students with a3.5 GPA or higher in the major), or a thesis basedon a seminar paper. In each case, students consultwith the faculty advisor(s) to choose the mostappropriate Capstone Experience, which must beapproved by the faculty advisor(s). The SeniorCapstone Experience is graded Pass, Fail or Honorsand should be taken during the semester in whichthe student plans to graduate.

FRS 301 and FRS 302 is a sequence designed todeepen the student's skills reading, writing,speaking, and listening. FRS 301 focuses onwriting: Journalistic, cultural, and literaryreadings about contemporary French life serve todevelop the student's ability to analyze texts andto write clearly and persuasively in varied forms,such as the r sum , analysis, commentary,description, and short narrative. These coursesprepare the student for upper-level literature andcivilization courses and for study abroad in aFrancophone country.

FRS 301 and FRS 302 is a sequence designed todeepen the student's skills reading, writing,speaking, and listening. FRS 302 focuses onspeaking: Class discussion aims at stimulatingfluent and spontaneous use of spoken French. Thecourse includes instruction in phonetics as aguide to correct pronunciation as well asmultimedia cultural activities intended to improvethe student's linguistic and cultural knowledge.These courses prepare the student for upper-levelliterature and civilization courses and for studyabroad in a Francophone country.

FRS 311 Contemporary France 4 Credits
Taught in English, this course provides anintroductory historical and cultural study ofcontemporary France. Students are providedtools for cultural interpretation via criticaltexts and the analysis of French films and theirAmerican remakes; they will then apply them to thecultural history of France. We explore theimpact of World War II, of the students protestsof May '68, and of women's emancipation movements.We examine France's position in the world --its past as a colonizing nation, its present post-colonial actions, and its multiculturalidentity enriched be different waves ofimmigration. We study the political and economicroles of women, their place in the family, healthconcerns, and struggles for autonomy through worksby women. This course counts toward the Frenchmajor and minor if the journal entries, mid-termexam, and final paper are written in French.

FRS 312 The Contemporary Francophone World 4 Credits
Taught in English, this course provides anintroductory historical and cultural study of thecontemporary Francophone world. Designed as asurvey of the non-European Francophone world, thecourse offers for study both literary andcultural documents from the Caribbean, NorthAfrica, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Canada. Initiallystudents are provided tools for culturalinterpretation via critical texts, media analysis(including print and internet sources) and theanalysis of Francophone films; they then applythem to the cultural history of the Francophoneworld. We explore French colonization, the processof decolonization, and subsequent independencemovements. We examine social, political, andeconomic roles of both women and men, changinggender roles, and contemporary divisions of labor.Finally, we reflect on the political, historical,and sociocultural situations of post-colonialFrancophone nations.

This tutorial continues the development ofspecific listening, speaking, reading, writing,and critical thinking skills in the targetlanguage while majors pursue theirlanguage-immersion study abroad program. Studentscreate a portfolio remotely with frequentconsultation and feedback from a faculty advisor.The study abroad portfolio is assessed forprogress in the student's language learning skillsand personal development.
