Department of Education
Division of Social Sciences
The minor in School Counseling is designed to prepare Washington College students interested in a career working in a counseling capacity with K-12 students with the introductory skills required to help students identify challenges, integrate within a community, and plan for academic success. We anticipate that this minor can appeal to students interested in graduate school and careers in guidance and school counseling, school-based social work, and school psychology.
Students completing the Minor will be prepared for graduate programs in K-12 school guidance counseling and will have a liberal arts foundation for the career pathway. Although some graduate programs require only a major in a general area of the social sciences, some programs and employers look for a greater depth of content preparation and field experiences, and that is what this minor is designed to provide. Classes in the minor provide a foundation in educational theory and learning sciences and the scientific study of behavior and mind; upper-level courses provide problem solving and content application and communication skills supported by the opportunity for field work in a local school. The minor will prepare students for further study in an accredited, certified graduate program and eventual employment as a school counselor or in a related field.
Students cannot minor in School Counseling and Education Studies, Psychology, or Social Welfare. Human Development majors can only double-count EDU 251 and EDU 252 for the major and this minor.
