MUS 106 Rock, Pop, and American Culture 4 Credits
An examination of popular music in America fromthe 1830s through the modern day. With aparticular emphasis being placed on the 1950s and1960s, students will develop an understanding ofthe cultural, political, and economic forces ofthese eras and will examine how popular musichistory intersects with all aspects of Americanhistory and culture. This course also examinesseveral important threads in popular musichistory, including the ever-present, but everchanging, role of race relations, the impact ofevolving technologies, and the history of themusic industry. In addition to reading theassigned textbook, students are also asked towatch/listen to important archival performances,televised interviews with notable musicians,radio interviews with scholars of popularculture, and other relevant primary sources.

MUS 131 Music Theory I 4 Credits
The basic goal in music theory courses is to focuson the growth and development in the areas ofcomprehension, skills, and creativity. Theacademic approach is to study and apply principlesof melodic, harmonic, contrapuntal and formalstructures, which are basic to musical compositionand essential to the serious musician. The lectureportion of this course will focuses on theelements of diatonic harmony through part-writing,formal analysis, and composition. As a continuation of MUS 131, Music Theory IIcontinues the development of music comprehensionthrough theory lectures/exercises and aural skillstraining. Jazz is both a uniquely American style as well asan international collaboration. Beginning with anexamination of the roots and antecedents of jazzin the mid-1800s, students learn the artisticcontributions of many notable instrumentalists,vocalists, bandleaders and arrangers. Particularemphasis is placed upon understanding the musicaland social forces that influenced each artist, andthe role of each artist in encouraging innovationand development within this art form. This course gives an overview of major topicsin creativity: the pleasures and pitfalls as wellas effective strategies to use in creative work.Each week we tackle another issue and explore waysto approach creativity in the broadest sense. Atthe same time students work on self-directedprojects throughout the semester (largely outsideof class time), submit weekly progress updates,and periodically share with the class. By the endof the semester students have a range of tools andhands-on experiences to return to again and againin their future creative work.Prerequisite: Onecourse of Studio Art, Music, Theatre, Dance, orCreative Writing, or permission of the instructor.

MUS 279 Japanese Music Ensemble 1 Credit
By the Edo period (1603-1868), three instrumentshad emerged from various directions to becomepopular among the Japanese people. The koto, a13-string zither, the shamisen, a 3-stringbanjo-like instrument, and the shakuhachi, a ZenBuddhist bamboo flute. In this new ensemble,students are introduced to these instruments, andhave the opportunity to research, write about, andlearn how to perform on an instrument of thestudent's choice. Students also learn the uniquenotation systems of each instrument and gain adeep understanding of Japanese traditional arts inrelation to the social, ideological, and culturaldevelopment of Japanese traditional aesthetics.

This course introduces students toanthropological, ethnomusicological, andethnochoreological ethnographic fieldwork methods,including participant observation, ethnographicinterviews, and audio/video documentationtechniques. Students are exposed to bothAfro-Cuban religious and Cuban popular expressiveforms. Students learn about the interrelatednessof music, dance, visual arts, ritual, andreligious beliefs, as well as Cuban views on Cubanculture, gender, and race. Students attend/observeboth formal and informal music performances andtake music and dance lessons where they will havean opportunity to engage musicians on a one-on-onebasis. MUS 475 W.C. Jazz Combo 1 Credit
The Washington College Jazz Combo allows advancedjazz students to perform various styles of jazzliterature, including standards, originalcompositions and arrangements. Ample opportunityis given for improvisation. The Combo presentsprograms each semester and performs at variousCollege functions throughout the year. Theensemble is open to students through auditions,which take place at the beginning of eachsemester.

A learning contract is developed prior toenrollment in an internship. Evaluation of studentperformance is completed by the faculty mentorbased on fulfillment of the contract terms andwritten evaluation by the internship sitesupervisor. 45 hours are required for eachcredit. Students must be enrolled in the course,prior to beginning work. Graded A-F or Pass/Fail.
