An introduction to Mandarin Chinese, this courseoffers an integrated approach to basic languageskills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.Class work is supplemented by laboratory periodsthat include engagement with native language viamultimedia sources. Discussion of a graded seriesof cultural topics promotes students understandingof Chinese life and society and aids languagelearning. The class will meet three days plus twolaboratory periods per week. Please note that thiscourse is NOT appropriate for native speakers ofMandarin.

CHN 351  Chinese Cinema: Ideology & Box Office  4 Credits  
Taught in English. China is a growing producer ofand market for the world's films. Chinesecinematography has a long and distinguishedhistory. This course examines that history and howthe current state of Chinese film has come to be.The content units deal with several broad topicsrooted in some of the fundamental issues of any ofthe humanistic arts. The overall theme of thecourse is the tension between Chinese identity andcommercial success. Students also explore thecreation of proscriptive types in gender andethnicity, the intersection between politics andfilm, Globalization and modernity, and theapplicability of western theory to the analysis ofChinese film. In addition to regular classperiods, there is one mandatory film screening perweek which will be listed as an accompanying lab.

This tutorial continues the development ofspecific listening, speaking, reading, writing,and critical thinking skills in the targetlanguage while majors pursue theirlanguage-immersion study abroad program. Studentscreate a portfolio remotely with frequentconsultation and feedback from a faculty advisor.The study abroad portfolio is assessed forprogress in the student's language learning skillsand personal development.
